Back in 2010, I went to Europe for the first time. I was 20 years old and went with my brother who was still in high school at the time. We visited Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We saw Munich, Dachau, Swarovski HG, stayed in the Swiss Alps and saw my first real life Picasso painting. Then and there, I made a promise to myself to go somewhere I've never been at least once a year. As much of a homebody I am, travel is so important to me. It makes me grateful for what I have and to see new things, have new experiences and meet new people. It expands your horizons. And it makes coming home so much sweeter.
In the 13 years since I've made that promise, I haven't missed a year. Sometimes I went to multiple places I've never been in one year and some trips were closer to home but still new.
A few years into dating my husband, I bought him a map of the United States where you scratch off a state once you visit. And a new goal was tacked onto my original one. We try and visit a new state each year and collect polaroids to pin up next to the state. Some states we've been to separately but it doesn't count in our minds because we didn't go together so it's like a whole new trip.
The state we crossed off this year was Connecticut! Close to home but still new. We visited Mystic and New Haven CT, mainly for the pizza and the fall foliage.
